They are anonymous unless you have come across them at Webmaster World Pubcons some years ago. The top 100 or so SEOs remain anonymous because they do not sell their services preferring to make very large sums of money SEOing their own affiliate and PPC sites. Advertising themselves would just draw attention from the wannabes, which is not what they want for obvious reasons.
Those SEOs who can’t make a fortune for themselves sell their services to others normally by starting an SEO company. These are the SEOs who need the publicity so that their company can gain business.

If there is one thing you are going to do in SEO, getting back-links to your site would be the thing. With that said, you want to focus on the quality of the links as opposed to quantity. Try to get links from relevant pages/sites with your keyword in the anchor text. As for having bad inbound links hurting you is false. Only if you link back to these bad sites will you be penalized by the search engines. Think about it, if bad links could hurt your site by simply linking up to your site, why wouldn’t companies target their competitors with bad links? Search engines know this and this is why they don’t penalize but they just simply don’t give you credit for the link.

I really don’t think any software will help you bring traffic to your website. They may help you do certain off-page tasks of getting links or at best submitting your website to directories, but it is you who will have to work hard to achieve traffic and rankings.
Had this is the case, companies who spend millions in online marketing (SEO/SEM) $$$, would just buy the software and beat the competition.
You see SEO/SEM conferences being help every one and then, which is certainly not needed ifa software is doing to get you traffic or results.
Danny sullivan, or Jim Whalen wouldn’t be famous. 
It is just pure gimmick to help sell their applications. I’m sure these applications will be very good in what they do, but ultimately its you who will have to work hard to get desired results.
Organic is the way to get to the Top in Google.

As long as there is enough electricity there will be internet and if there’s internet there will be search engines and if there are search engines there will be SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
However, Google does continue to refine methods to filter out black-hat SEO techniques (SPAM / Abuse).
So, basically short of an apocalyptic event, SEO will still be around for a foreseeable future.

Wordtracker’s free tool and Google’s External tool are the most popular ones right now. But when it comes to SEO, you need good analytics. Specifically, you need to know the keywords through which people landed on your site.
For this, you can add site analytics like Statcounter or Google Analytics to your page code. Both are essential for extending the utility of your search tool.
Ive heard the more the better, but I also heard people just say that so you use A LOT then you get bad seo (helping them). Research has shown me to believe 3-5 words for main page, then one good keyword for each other page. PLEASE HELP
Here’s a webmaster article from google.com regarding placement of metatags:
Placement of Metatags:
A ranking or search order does take place with Google
and Yahoo and it begins with the "Title" metag which
should consist of no more than 65 characters separated
by commas. The "Title" should describe in generic
terms, the goods and services, followed by a location
from which the resource is located, i.e., city, state.
The placement of a domain name which is not generic
within the "Title" is not appropriate, unless your
domain name is a major recognizable brand name.
The second metatag is the "Description" which is
usually 25-30 words to form a complete sentence which
best describes one’s goods and services.
And the very last category – "Keywords" are also
somewhat limited to 15-16 words which can be plural
and compound in nature. Again, avoid multiple entries
which could be mistaken as "spamdexed entries" which
is defined as the loading, and submission of
repetitive words into a particular metatag category.
"Spamdexing" when discovered on a webpage and reported
to Google’s spamreport.com can result in the
elimination of your website from their search
directory.
